Why is good oral hygiene important?

» Healthy teeth allow you to eat and speak properly
» It reduces the risk of dental problems such as gingivitis and bad breath
» It is necessary for your overall well-being

What are “cavities” or tooth decay?

» Oral bacteria build up on teeth and digest sugars to make acids that weaken tooth enamel
» Commonly located among chewing surfaces in mouth or between teeth
» A cavity can destroy the tooth, kill the delicate nerves at its center, and infect the root tip

What is bottle decay?

» Caused by frequent exposure of child’s teeth to sugars or milk
» Results when bottle is left overnight in baby’s mouth
» Acid in foods results in tooth decay

What is gum disease?

» An inflammation of the gums that may affect the bone which supports the teeth
» Caused by bacteria in plaque (a sticky layer formed on teeth)
» Gingivitis: First stage of gum disease where gums are inflamed due to plaque
» Periodontitis: Second stage where supporting bone and teeth fibers are irreversibly damaged and an area below the gumline begins to trap food and plaque
» Advanced Periodontitis: Final stage where bone and teeth fibers are destroyed, causing teeth to loosen or shift

What is oral  cancer?

» Cancer which may develop in any part of the oral cavity or oropharynx
» Usually begins in the flat cells of the surface of the mouth and may spread to other parts of the body
» Possible risk factors include genetics, tobacco, alcohol and sun exposure
