How to Brush Thoroughly |
| |
| » |
Use a soft-bristled, small-headed brush and a toothpaste containing fluoride |
| » |
Hold the toothbrush at a 45° angle from your gums and slowly roll it away from the gum line |
| » |
Using short, gentle, back-and-forth strokes, gently brush the outside, inside and chewing surface of each tooth. |
| » |
Pay careful attention to the gum line and hard-to-reach back teeth. |
| » |
Use a tongue cleaner to remove bacteria and freshen breath. |
| » |
Remember to brush for at least 2 minutes twice a day. |
| » |
Replace your toothbrush once every three months. |
|
| |
How to Floss Properly |
| |
| » |
Use either nylon or PTFE floss. |
| » |
Take 18" of floss, wind most of it around each middle finger, and leave about 1" or 2" to work with. |
| » |
While holding the floss tightly between your thumbs and index fingers, slide it vertically between teeth. |
| » |
Use the same gentle motion to remove floss from teeth. |
| » |
Use clean segments of floss when moving from tooth to tooth. |
| » |
Remember to floss daily to remove plaque and food particles in places where a toothbrush cannot easily reach. |
|
| |
Proper Diet |
| |
| » |
Frequently consuming sugary foods and drinks causes tooth decay |
| » |
Frequently eating acidic foods and drinks results in tooth erosion |
| » |
Keep fizzy drinks, sweets, and cakes to a minimum |
| » |
Avoid sugary foods and drinks as snacks between meals or before bed |
| » |
Fruit, vegetables, and cheese contain natural sugars and are less likely to cause decay |
| » |
Finish meals with an alkaline food like milk or cheese to neutralize acid in the mouth and prevent erosion |
| » |
Remember to drink lots of water |
|
| |
Fluoride |
| |
| » |
Fluoride is a natural mineral which reduces tooth decay by hardening tooth enamel |
| » |
If your drinking water is fluoridated, then brushing daily with a fluoride toothpaste is considered adequate |
| » |
If your community's water is not fluoridated, fluoride tablets or drops can be taken as supplements |
